EnglishConnect 3
EnglishConnect 3(EC3) is a program provided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints that helps learners develop English skills in an environment of fellowship and faith. It is designed to help individuals around the world increase self-reliance and expand opportunities through learning English. EC3 is implemented by BYU-Pathway Worldwide.
EC3 is managed and offered through BYU-Pathway Worldwide under the direction of Field Operations (Area Managers and BYU-Pathway Service missionaries). The Areas, Locations, and Groups are managed in PATH and learners use the application to apply for EC3.
EC3 students use web application similar to the Canvas LMS (learning management system). On this app they can practice reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, and vocabulary. They can also access preparation and lesson plans for their weekly gathering.
What are the similarities and differences between EnglishConnect and PathwayConnect?
Similarities:
- Both are managed and offered through BYU-Pathway under the direction of Field Operations (Area Managers and BYU-Pathway Service Missionaries). The Areas, Locations, and Groups are managed in PATH
- Learners' applications for both are also in the PATH
- EC3 learners also have assigned missionaries and weekly gatherings
Differences:
- EC3 is cheaper than PathwayConnect
- There isn’t an assigned teacher (although there are graders for writing and speaking questions).
- Learners can earn a certificate but not for college credit
- Students use a different learning application, instead of Canvas. It is located at the ec3.englishconnect.org. The EC3 learning application is where they can practice English and access preparation and lesson plans for their weekly gatherings.
Competency-based Program
The Proficiency Practice section of the EC3 app is mastery-based. The practice requires not only completion but also a passing score.
Students must pass a minimum of 4 units in each function (Ask/Answer, Describe, Narrate, Negotiate) to earn a star. If they complete the unit but don't pass it, they will simply be given another unit until they pass. They must earn a star in each function to unlock the level test.
They have 3 chances to pass the level test. If they do not pass, that level is reset and they have to begin again.

EnglishConnect 1 & 2
EnglishConnect 1 & 2 (EC 1 & 2) are self-reliance courses provided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints that help learners develop English skills in an environment of fellowship and faith. It is designed to help individuals around the world increase self-reliance and expand opportunities through learning English. EC1 & 2 are implemented by wards and stakes along with the other Church Self-Reliance courses (see churchofjesuschrist.org/self-reliance/manuals-and-videos?lang=eng).
EC1 & 2 are designed to teach basic English to members and friends of the Church. EC1 & 2 groups are typically set up and offered by wards and stakes.
The EnglishConnect website- https://www.englishconnect.org/ has all the information necessary for learners, teachers, and priesthood leaders to offer and participate in EC1 & 2 groups.
EnglishConnect for Missionaries
EnglishConnect for Missionaries (ECM) is a program provided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints that helps learners develop English skills in an environment of fellowship and faith. It is designed to support missionaries in their charge to learn English on their mission (See "Learn English" in Preach My Gospel chapter 7). ECM is implemented by the Missionary Department.
Currently serving missionaries who marked that their native language is something other than English on their missionary application are enrolled in ECM in PATH. They use ECM to learn English while they are missionaries so when they finish their missions, they are prepared to participate in BYU-Pathway offerings. Missionaries are automatically enrolled in ECM when they begin their mission and unenrolled when they finish. This enrollment gives missionaries access to the EC3 online practice (https://ec3.englishconnect.org/my-plan) for the duration of their missions. They can also find the EC1 and 2 resources for missionaries on the ECM website: https://missionary.englishconnect.org/

EnglishConnect 3
Students regularly choose to enroll concurrently in both EnglishConnect 3 and PathwayConnect or an Online Certificate and Degree. Because concurrent enrollment can be a major time commitment, we counsel EC3/PC missionaries to work with the PathwayConnect students and make sure that they understand what will be required for both programs. Because PathwayConnect is not an English language learning program, many learners use concurrent enrollment as a way to supplement and continue their English learning gains while progressing through BYU-Pathway Worldwide.
