While BYU-Pathway is not legally required to provide access and accommodations to EnglishConnect, PathwayConnect, or Institute students with disabilities, it endeavors to provide reasonable assistance to students who need it. Such assistance is provided voluntarily and at BYU-Pathway's sole discretion. The voluntary assistance students receive may differ from accommodations provided by other institutions.
If the student needs assistance for a disability, it is the student's responsibility to request it. Such requests should be made as soon as possible since assistance is not retroactive. BYU-Pathway Worldwide cannot agree to requests for assistance that would change the essential nature of the program.
BYU-Pathway Worldwide will provide, upon request, text-to-speech software (we do not provide speech-to-text). If you are interested in the software, contact Pathway Support. You will need to be the one to request the software.
You can request text-to-speech software beginning the Saturday before classes begin. If you make a request before this time, you may download Kurzweil 3000 to learn more before using it. This software is free for you to use.
Here are links to get more information about Kurzweil 3000:
If the student requests speech-to-text software (different from text-to-speech), PathwayConnect cannot provide the student with software, but all the videos within the course curriculum have closed captioning or are transcribed.
For assistance, the student should communicate directly with their online instructors, missionaries, or local leaders as appropriate.
The students may require assistance during their gatherings. Assistance available during a gathering may include:
- Permission to record gatherings
- Bringing a sign language interpreter to gatherings
- Bringing a family member
- Permission to take breaks, walk, and/or stand
- Allowing a student to be a lead student with a partner
- Modifying group work participation
- Providing preferred seating (in-person gatherings)
For more assistance, they can also reach out to tutors if needed. Keep in mind the tutors are not trained on how to work with students with disabilities, but they can reach out anyway and seek as much help as the tutor can offer to them.
Services such as a personal attendant, help with activities of daily living (ADL's), interpreters/translators, transportation to gatherings, or other transportation are classified as "Personal Services," and are not provided.
